The 2009-2010 season marks the grand opening of the striking new Winters Creek Lodge, a steel-and-glass structure designed to invite the outside in. Situated at the southeastern edge of the Slide Bowl base, the lodge is just steps from parking and the Blazing Zephyr lift. The ultra-modern design features a cozy bar, a well-equipped kitchen perfect for creating those signature dishes and an expansive outdoor deck. The Winters Creek Lodge takes Lake Tahoe’s highest base resort to a whole new level. The resort sits at an elevation of 8,260 feet and tops out at 9,700 feet, with an average annual snowfall of 400 inches. Fifty percent of the trails at Mt. Rose rank as beginner and intermediate runs, while the remaining half are designated for advanced and expert skiers and riders. Many of these black diamond runs can be found in the extreme terrain of Slide Mountain known as The Chutes. Mt. Rose officially adopted the 200-acre playground in 2004 to the delight of extreme skiers and riders everywhere, some of whom had ventured into the previously out-of-bounds area for years. Both the north and east slopes of Mt. Rose are serviced by “six pack” high-speed chairs, giving the mountain dual lightning-fast, base-to-summit rides. The resort also has two quad chairs, two triple chairs and one surface lift, for a total uphill lift capacity of 11,000 skiers every hour. In addition to its assortment of exciting trails, Mt. Rose offers two terrain parks, Badlands and Double Down, both of which are located in the East Bowl and filled with table tops, boxes and rails.
The lengthy and wide-open beginner slopes at Mt. Rose, which feature their own dedicated lifts, make learning to ski or snowboard a pleasure. The resort boasts a highly qualified and friendly teaching staff for both group and personal lessons, and “beginner-specific” equipment is available for rent at the main lodge. For children, Mt. Rose offers the popular Rosebuds Children’s Camp.
The main lodge at Mt. Rose is home to rentals and repairs, guest services, a sports shop, a bevy of dining options, a large sundeck and more. The resort is located just 25 minutes from Reno, making it the closest to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
